佛告釋提桓因。云何妄語。若持一日戒。功德福報必得如我。是為實說。所在之處有持此戒者。惡鬼遠之住處安隱。是故於六齋日持齋受戒得福增多。

The Buddha told Śakra Devānām Indra: "Why speak falsely? If one maintains the one-day precept, the karmic reward of merit will surely be like mine—that is the truthful statement. Wherever there is someone maintaining this precept, evil ghosts stay far away, and the dwelling place is peaceful and secure. Therefore, maintaining the fast and receiving the precepts on the six fasting days brings vastly increased merit."
