故薩婆多論。問曰。若不受三歸得五戒不。答不得。要先受三歸。後方得戒（下受八戒亦同此法）。

Therefore, the Sarvāstivāda-śāstra asks: 'If one does not receive the three refuges, does one obtain the five precepts?' Answer: 'One does not. One must first receive the three refuges; only then does one obtain the precepts.' (Receiving the eight precepts below also follows this method.)
