Therefore, the Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra says: The Buddha told Mahāmati: 'A bodhisattva has immeasurable causes and conditions for which he should not eat meat. I will now briefly state ten causes and conditions. First, all sentient beings from the beginning have successively, through causes and conditions, constantly been one's six kinds of relatives; because of regarding them as kin, one should not eat meat. Second, butchers sell meats of donkeys, mules, dromedaries, foxes, dogs, oxen, horses, humans, and beasts mixed together. Third, it is produced and grown from impure elements. Fourth, sentient beings smelling the scent all give rise to terror; just as when dogs see a caṇḍāla, they hate him, become frightened, and bark in packs. Fifth, it causes the practitioner's mind of compassion not to arise. Sixth, it is relished by the ordinary and foolish, foul-smelling and impure, with no good reputation. Seventh, it prevents incantations and spells from being accomplished. Eighth, seeing forms, people who kill living beings arouse consciousness and become attached to flavours. Ninth, that meat-eater is abandoned by the gods, his breath foul and evil abundant. Tenth, in wilderness forests, tigers and wolves catch the scent. I have always said: Regarding all food and drink, regard it as the flesh of one's own child; regard it as taking medicine. For this reason, in the past there was a king named Siṃhasudhāva who ate various meats, eventually reaching human flesh; his ministers and people could not bear it, and immediately rebelled, as explained in the Kalmāṣapāda-sūtra.'
