Śramaṇa Shi Linggan of the Bodhimaṇḍa of Da Chanding Temple in the Western Capital under the Sui dynasty, surnamed Li in secular life, was a native of Tidao in Jincheng. Resolute in nature, he looked up with reverence and restrained himself with respectful discipline. Guarding the three karmic paths, he treated the prohibitions against innate sins and conventional offenses alike. In the second year of Renshou, he received an imperial decree to escort śarīra to Luozhou and erect a pagoda at Hanwang Temple. At first, as they circumambulated the pagoda site, divine light was repeatedly emitted; the wind rose and extinguished the lamps, yet the entire night remained brightly illuminated without need for lamplight. Furthermore, an extraordinary fragrance was sensed arriving with the wind, witnessed by both monastics and layfolk alike. On the eighth day of the fourth month, when the śarīra were lowered, the tree leaves in the temple compound all withered, and crows and birds cried mournfully. Once the pit was filled level, all returned to normal. On the twenty-ninth day of the first month of the eighth year of Daye, he died at his own temple at the age of seventy-eight. (The above two proofs are from the Tang Gaoseng Zhuan.)
