The Commentary states: Having received the precepts in accordance with the sūtra, one must also recognize the six grave precepts, the eight grave precepts, and so forth. Regarding the first six grave precepts, as the Upāsakaśīla-sūtra says: If an upāsaka, having received and maintained the precepts, even kills a deva, a human, down to an ant, they should not do so. If after receiving the precepts they verbally instruct someone to kill or kill with their own body, that person immediately loses the upāsaka precepts; they will not even attain the heat stage, how much less the four fruits of a śramaṇa. This is called the first grave offense. Likewise, one must not steal; one must not falsely claim to have attained the meditation on impurity; one must not engage in sexual misconduct; one must not broadcast the faults and transgressions of the four assemblies; one must not sell alcohol. If one breaks these precepts, one immediately loses the upāsaka precepts; one will not even attain the heat stage, how much less the four fruits of a śramaṇa. These are called the six grave offenses.
