During the Taiyuan era of the Jin, there was bhikṣu Zhu Tanrui of the Xie household. He was in his twenties, fair-skinned and handsome, a bhikṣu of worldly ways. He once passed by the front of the Qingxi Shrine and went inside to look. Returning at dusk, he dreamed that a person came and said to him: 'Would you be willing to come and be the god in my shrine?' On another night Tanrui asked in a dream: 'Who is this woman?' The woman said: 'I am the Second Daughter of Qingxi.' After about a month like this, he suddenly fell ill. When about to die, he said to the young men who were his fellow students: 'I have no merit, nor have I great transgressions. Upon death I am to become the god of the Qingxi Shrine. If you gentlemen pass by, you may come and visit me.' After he died, when the young clerics arrived, he exchanged greetings and inquiries in a spirit voice, sounding just as he had in life. As they were about to leave, he said: 'For a long time I have not heard chanting (pāṭha); I long to hear it once.' His companion Huijian thereupon performed chanting for him; [Tanrui] then still chanted verses of praise, saying: 'Even parting at the crossroads brings sorrow, how much more so this divergence, where body and spirit are sundered! How can my feelings express this lamentation in the dark unknown?' Thereupon he sobbed, overwhelmed with sorrow, and the clerics all shed tears for him. (This one verification comes from the Xu soushen ji.)
