Furthermore, the Abhidharmakośa-śāstra states: What are the five turbidities? The first is the turbidity of lifespan; the second is the turbidity of the kalpa; the third is the turbidity of afflictions; the fourth is the turbidity of views; the fifth is the turbidity of sentient beings. When in the descending kalpa the five turbidities, such as lifespan, arrive, they are termed 'turbidities' because they have reached their coarsest and lowest state, having become dregs. Due to the first two turbidities, lifespan and the requisites for happiness are sequentially diminished. Furthermore, due to the [next] two turbidities, auxiliary virtues are diminished. Why is that? Because of these two turbidities, many sentient beings extensively indulge in the sensual pleasures of dust-like desires and [misguided] self-mortification, which can diminish the auxiliary virtues of householders and renunciants. Due to the final turbidity, their physical stature, complexion, freedom from illness, and bodily strength are diminished, as well as wisdom, mindfulness, and unshakeable right exertion—these virtues are ruined on this account.
