99.21

譬如城傍水　種種居不淨
遠來值門閉　眾共止此池
初來不覺知　飢渴而取飲
并洗除熱乏　疲極得臥寐
天曉至水邊　審覩知不淨
眾人共厭惡　各各懷嘔吐
以得第三道　見欲樂不安
入禪定無患　觀欲如瑕水

"Like the water beside the city,
Where all kinds of impurities dwell;
Coming from afar and finding the gates closed,
They stop together at this pool.
When first arriving, they do not perceive it;
Hungry and thirsty, they draw and drink,
And bathe to remove heat and exhaustion;
Extremely tired, they fall asleep.
At dawn they go to the water's edge,
And looking carefully, know it is impure;
All together they loathe and abhor it,
Each harboring the urge to vomit.
Having attained the third path,
One sees that the pleasures of desire are unsafe;
Entering dhyāna-concentration, there is no peril,
Viewing desires like flawed water."
