Now, the dharmakāya has no form, but manifests in response to conditions; the capacities and conditions are of ten thousand kinds, and so the traces of transformation are not of a single sort. Some abandon desire to receive the Way; some abide in defilement to display expedient means. If he did not display taking a consort, common understanding would slander him as not being of human stock. Although he displayed the realm of the five desires, he did not alter the determination of his single mind. Thus, he passed through the four gates of the royal city and witnessed the eight sufferings of old age, illness, and death. Thereupon he sighed to himself: "If human life is like this, how can one endure staying in the world? Casting off one's sandals to seek the truth—surely it lies in this!" Hence the *Vimalakīrti-sūtra* says: "First ensnaring them with desire, later causing them to enter the Buddha Way."
