As the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya states: Then the Bodhisattva went to Ārāḍa Kālāma and studied the concentration of the sphere of nothingness. Striving with diligence, he soon realised this dharma. The Bodhisattva then left him and went on. Later he went to Udraka Rāmaputra and studied the concentration of neither-perception-nor-non-perception. Striving with diligence, he soon realised this dharma. The Bodhisattva contemplated: "The concentrations of these two places are not nirvāṇa, nor are they the place of eternal stillness and cessation." Finding no delight in this dharma, he abandoned the two men, departed, and sought an even superior dharma. That superior dharma which the Bodhisattva sought was the unexcelled dharma of rest. At that time, five men followed the Bodhisattva, thinking: "If the Bodhisattva attains the Way, he will expound the Dharma for us."
