Throughout immeasurable asaṃkhyeya kalpas in the past, / He practised various forms of giving, training in dāna; / Pure in śīla and kṣānti, / Zealous in seated meditation, he studied prajñā. / For the sake of bringing peace and joy to all sentient beings, / He fully endured all kinds of bitter hardships. / Sixty thousand queens, consorts, and palace ladies within the palace, / He cast aside to leave the household life as easily as casting off worn shoes. / Alone for six years, he cultivated austerities, / Eating each day but a single grain of hemp, of rice, or of barley. / Striving day and night without sleeping, / His physical form retained only skin and bones. / Sitting in contemplation beneath the Bodhi tree, / Eight hundred thousand heavenly demons came. / Filling the four directions, above, below, the earth, and the sky, / Across eighty yojanas, all was completely filled. / Such demon armies and their retinues / He was able to defeat and cause to submit. / Perfecting unsurpassed, supreme bodhi, / He attained and realized the fruit of the ultimate truth.
