At that time Mahākāśyapa assembled the monastic saṃgha and made the announcement to assemble and discuss the Dharma and Vinaya. Ānanda then rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, joined his palms, and said to Mahākāśyapa: 'I personally heard from the Buddha and memorized the Buddha's words, beginning from the first section up to all the skandhakas, the various vinaya divisions, and the Ekottarika; all these are compiled as the Vinaya-piṭaka.' They then compiled all the long sūtras as the *Dīrgha-āgama*; all the middle-length sūtras as the *Madhyama-āgama*; from one thing up to ten things, and from ten things up to eleven things, as the *Ekottarika-āgama*; and miscellaneous matters as the *Saṃyukta-āgama*. Such works as the *Jātaka*, *Itivṛttaka*, up to the *Gāthā-sūtras* were compiled as the Miscellaneous Piṭaka. The treatises on conditioned and unconditioned states, connections, and corresponding topics were compiled as the Abhidharma-piṭaka. At that time they were compiled as the Tripiṭaka. In Rājagṛha, five hundred arhats together compiled the Dharma and Vinaya; therefore it is said that those who compiled the Dharma and Vinaya were five hundred persons.
