Mahākāśyapa spoke again: "When the Buddha was about to enter nirvāṇa, near the city of Kuśinagara his back pained him. Having folded his uttarāsaṅga in four to lie down, he said to you, 'I require water,' but you did not supply it. This is a duṣkṛta offense." Ānanda replied: "At that time, five hundred carts crossed the stream and churned the water muddy; it was on this account that I did not fetch it." Mahākāśyapa spoke again: "Even if the water was muddy, the Buddha possessed great spiritual power and could cause even the muddy water of the great ocean to become pure. Why did you not give it to him? This is your fault; go and make deśanā for this duṣkṛta."
