At that time, Mahākāśyapa arose from his seat, put on a cloth saṃghāṭī, held his niṣīdanam in his hands, and went before the high seat. Having spread the sitting mat and bowed to Ānanda, he stood after circumambulating him to the right three times. Then the Mahābrahmā Heavenly King held a seven-jeweled canopy covering above Ānanda. At that time, Śakra, Lord of the Devas, stepped forward and placed a seven-jeweled table before Ānanda. The asura kings, such as Rāhu, each held a seven-jeweled incense burner before Ānanda. Ānanda received them and placed them upon the jeweled table. The Heavenly King of Paranirmitavaśavartin stepped forward with a seven-jeweled stool behind the jeweled table. At that time, the demon king Pāpīyān held a seven-jeweled whisk and presented it to Ānanda, and remained flanking him alongside Śakra on both sides. The Four Heavenly Kings each attended at the four legs of the high seat. Thirty-two messengers stood behind Kāśyapa, each reverently kneeling with knees touching the ground, respectfully listening. Then Mahākāśyapa bowed to Ānanda, again circumambulated him three times, and stepped forward to greet him, no differently than [one would greet] the Buddha. After that, he inquired of the circumstances as recorded separately elsewhere, in every case relying on the sūtras, beginning with "Thus [have I heard]" and continuing through to the very end with "joyfully upheld and practiced."
