He asked again: "I heard from the Buddha that after his parinirvāṇa, the entire Vinaya will circulate throughout Jambudvīpa and the other three continents. The inclinations and views of sentient beings are not identical. In the remaining ten billion continents it should also all be circulated. I wish to compile it, and now confronting gods and men, you must answer me." He replied: "I received the Buddha's instruction: 'After my parinirvāṇa, tell Mahākāśyapa and Mañjuśrī to circulate my Vinaya in the thirty-two kingdoms of this continent of Jambudvīpa; these sentient beings all have great capacities and are capable of circulating Kāśyapa's bequeathed teachings. In the continent of Pūrvavideha in the east, two hundred and sixty kingdoms, and in the continent of Aparagodānīya in the west, one hundred and thirty kingdoms, will all practice Kāśyapa's bequeathed teachings. The sentient beings of the other continents have meager merit and are not capable of hearing the teaching; do not circulate this Dharma [there]. Within forty years after the Tathāgata's parinirvāṇa, send forth two divisions to circulate in these four continents.'"
