"Worshipping toward heaven means that there are five duties in a person serving śramaṇas and practitioners of the Way. First, they must face them with a good heart. Second, they must choose fine words when speaking with them. Third, they must respect them with their body. Fourth, they must yearn for them with affection. Fifth, as śramaṇas and practitioners of the Way are heroes among men, one must respectfully attend upon them and inquire about the Dharma that transcends the world. Śramaṇas and practitioners of the Way must regard the common people with six intentions. First, they teach them dāna and not to be stingy themselves. Second, they teach them to keep the precepts and not to violate them themselves. Third, they teach them kṣānti and not to become enraged. Fourth, they teach them diligence and not to be indolent or neglectful. Fifth, they teach them single-minded concentration and not to be heedless. Sixth, they teach people clever wisdom and not to be ignorant. Practising in this way is the teaching of worshipping the six directions given when your father was alive. Why worry about not becoming wealthy?" Having heard this, Śṛgāla immediately received the five precepts, made prostrations, and departed.
