As the New Vibhāṣā says: The Demon King then saw the Bodhisattva sitting under the Bodhi tree with an upright body, motionless, vowing to attain bodhi. Hurriedly coming out from his palace, he went to the Bodhisattva and said to him, 'Kṣatriya, you may rise from this seat! In this present turbid and evil age, sentient beings are obstinate; you certainly cannot realize unexcelled bodhi. For now you should presently receive the status of a wheel-turning king, and I will offer you the seven treasures.' The Bodhisattva told him, 'What you now say is like enticing a small child. The sun, moon, and stars may be made to fall; mountains, forests, and the great earth may rise into empty space; but to make me now fail to attain the Great Awakening and rise from this seat is completely impossible.' Afterward, the Demon led thirty-six koṭis of demonic armies, each manifesting various terrifying forms and brandishing weapons of boundless varieties, filling an expanse of thirty-six yojanas, rushing all at once beneath the Bodhi tree to disturb and agitate the Bodhisattva; but none could succeed. The Bodhisattva's body and mind were motionless, surpassing Mount Sumeru.
