Passing seven countries and traveling northwest, one arrives at the country of Karṇasuvarṇa. Both heterodox and orthodox [teachings] are practiced. There are three separate monasteries where milk and curd are not eaten; these are monks of Devadatta's faction. Further traveling southwest for seven hundred li, one arrives at the country of Uḍra. On its eastern border facing the sea is the city of Caritra, where many merchants halt on the seashore. Next, southwards in the great ocean, is the country of Siṅghala, which means "Lions-Grasper". The distance is approximately reckoned at over twenty thousand li. Every night looking south, one sees the jewel light atop the Buddha's tooth stūpa in that country, soaring in radiant brilliance appearing on the horizon.
