‘At that time, after the Bodhisattva spoke these verses, a spirit in that mountain assumed an ugly form to terrify me. By supernatural power, I made the place where he walked turn into precipitous cliffs and dangerous crags, so that he could not pass. At that time, the mountain spirit thought: “Because I terrified another with an evil mind, I am now made to face dangerous and difficult paths that cannot be traversed. I should now go to him and repent of my former transgression.” Having thought this, he immediately went there, and after finishing his repentance, made a vow and departed.’ The Buddha told the bhikṣus: ‘You should know that because that mountain spirit terrified me, for five hundred lives his bodily form was ugly, so that whoever saw him fled in alarm. Because of that repentance, he has now encountered me, left the household life, and attained the path.’ When the bhikṣus heard this, they rejoiced and put it into practice.
