As the Ekottarika-āgama says: At that time, the World-Honoured One addressed the monks: 'You should cultivate ten dharmas, and you will then achieve spiritual powers, eliminate all chaotic thoughts, and attain nirvāṇa. First is mindfulness of the Buddha. Second is mindfulness of the Dharma. Third is mindfulness of the Saṃgha. Fourth is mindfulness of the precepts. Fifth is mindfulness of giving. Sixth is mindfulness of devas. Seventh is mindfulness of cessation. Eighth is mindfulness of ānāpāna. Ninth is mindfulness of the impermanence of the body. Tenth is mindfulness of death. You should cultivate them well.'
