Again it is asked: After the Tathāgata attained the Way and converted the Kāśyapa brothers, his disciples gradually increased in number. In the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove he assembled the two assemblies of monastics. By the pool, he ordered both assemblies to take off their saṅghāṭīs, sent them to spread out their niṣīdanas, and bade the monks sit upon them, having them fold their saṅghāṭīs and place them upon their heads. At that time the World-Honoured One asked the monks: "Do you understand my intention?" The monks answered that they did not understand. "One thousand one hundred years after my demise, there will be many unrighteous monks who will destroy my Saddharma. There will be evil kings who will slaughter monks and burn scriptures and images. Therefore the Tathāgata rises from his seat, takes off his saṅghāṭī himself, folds it, and places it upon his head."
