If a bodhisattva does not make offerings to the Tathāgata and caityas alone, but broadly causes relatives, both lay and monastic, to make offerings together, this is termed an offering shared between oneself and others. If a bodhisattva possesses only a small amount of goods and, with a mind of loving-kindness and compassion, gives them to poor, suffering sentient beings of little merit, causing them to make offerings to the Tathāgata and caityas so that they attain peace and happiness, rather than keeping them for oneself, this is termed an offering made by others. One who makes offerings oneself obtains a great retribution; one who causes others to make offerings obtains an even greater retribution; one who makes offerings oneself and causes others to make offerings obtains the greatest and most immense retribution.
