"Third, if entering a donor's home, wash the hands up to the wrists at mealtime. When receiving food, do not stretch out the hands too far, but keep them one cubit (aratni) before you; do not fill the mouth with food, nor take too little. The balls of food made should be neither too large nor too small; do not open the mouth wide; do not make chewing noises; of the food served, eat only two-thirds, knowing when to stop and be content with food; do not look at another's bowl and give rise to a greedy mind; do not harbour distracted thoughts regarding the food received; look at one's own bowl and do not look from side to side. This is called the third method of subduing defilements.
