The Buddha told the bhikṣus: 'King Sarvadada at that time was myself. The king of that other country was Śāriputra. The brahmin’s son was Devadatta. That I perfected the merit of the six pāramitās and the primary and secondary physical marks was entirely due to Devadatta’s kindness. Devadatta is my good friend (kalyāṇamitra) and also my good teacher. After an asaṃkhyeya kalpa has elapsed, Devadatta will attain Buddhahood, named Devarāja (which in the Jin language means "King of Gods and Men").'
