"Third, King Yama asks again: 'When you were human, did you not see men and women in the world afflicted with bodily disease, experiencing physical suffering and pain, uneasy whether sitting or rising, their lives drawing short with worry, uncured by physicians—did you not see this?' The person answers, 'There was such a thing.' The king says: 'Could you alone avoid sickness? When humans grow old, they are all bound to fall sick. Hearing that your body was healthy, you should have striven to do good, uphold the scriptures and precepts, and straighten body, speech, and mind. How could you indulge yourself?' The person answers, 'It was because of my foolish blindness.' The king says: 'You yourself committed evil out of foolishness; it has nothing to do with your parents, sovereign, gods, śramaṇas, or practitioners of the Way. The offense originated solely with you. How could you not enjoy it [before]? Now you must receive [its retribution].' This is King Yama revealing the third divine messenger.
