Chen Yi was a man of Wu. In his youth, he served as a commandery clerk. His mother loved to eat scorched rice from the bottom of the pot. When Yi was on duty, he always carried a bag, and whenever food was cooked, he collected the scorched portions to give to his mother. Later, during the rebellion of Sun En, he had accumulated several decalitres and always carried it with him. When they were defeated, many starved to death, but Yi survived. His mother wept day and night remembering Yi, until her eyes lost their sight and her ears lost their hearing. When Yi returned, he entered, bowed twice, and wailed; his mother's eyes suddenly opened in clear sight. (The above verification is taken from Song Gong's Xiaozi zhuan.)
