The Biography of Master Xuanzang also says: The kingdom of Dhānyakaṭaka belongs to South India. In the mountains on the east and west of its capital, there are large monasteries. In those monasteries was the treatise master Bhāviveka (rendered in Tang as Mingbian). Before Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (formerly called Guanshiyin Bodhisattva), he abstained from grain and consumed only water for three years, determinedly praying and waiting to see Bodhisattva Maitreya. Thereupon Avalokiteśvara manifested his physical body to him and instructed him to go to the great mountain cliff south of the city, to the dwelling of the Vajrapāṇi spirit, and recite the Vajra-dhāraṇī. After three years, the spirit gave him instructions, saying: "Within this rock cliff is the palace of the asuras. If you pray according to the Dharma, the stone wall will open; you may immediately enter it to await the emergence of Maitreya, and I shall notify you." After another three years, he struck the stone wall with enchanted mustard seeds, and it burst wide open. At that time, there was a crowd of hundreds, thousands, and ten thousands of people who watched in astonishment and wonder. The treatise master stepped across the threshold, turning back repeatedly to invite the crowd, but only six people followed him in; the rest feared it was a pit of venomous serpents and dared not enter. Once the master had entered, the stone gate immediately closed back up like a wall.
