Furthermore, the *Bodhisattvapiṭaka-sūtra* states: At that time, the World-Honoured One addressed the elder Bhadrapāla, saying, 'Elder, you should know that I observe all sentient beings in the world being oppressed by ten matters of suffering. What are the ten? First, the oppression of the suffering of birth; second, the oppression of the suffering of old age; third, the oppression of the suffering of sickness; fourth, the oppression of the suffering of death; fifth, the oppression of the suffering of grief; sixth, the oppression of the suffering of enmity; seventh, the oppression of painful feeling; eighth, the oppression of anxiety; ninth, the oppression of pain and distress; tenth, the oppression of the great suffering of transmigration in birth and death. Seeing sentient beings oppressed by such ten kinds of suffering, in order to attain anuttarasambodhi and escape from such oppressions, I left the Śākya clan with pure faith and set forth toward the unsurpassed path. Furthermore, elder, I observe that all sentient beings in the world, throughout countless kalpas, have committed hundreds of thousands of nayutas of koṭis of faults, and are constantly struck by ten kinds of great poisonous arrows. What are the ten? First, the poisonous arrow of affection; second, the poisonous arrow of ignorance; third, the poisonous arrow of desire; fourth, the poisonous arrow of craving; fifth, the poisonous arrow of fault; sixth, the poisonous arrow of folly; seventh, the poisonous arrow of pride; eighth, the poisonous arrow of view; ninth, the poisonous arrow of existence; tenth, the poisonous arrow of non-existence. Elder, seeing sentient beings struck by these ten kinds of poisonous arrows, seeking anuttarasambodhi and seeking to sever such poisonous arrows, I left the Śākya clan with pure faith and set forth toward the unsurpassed path.'
