“In the worlds of the ten directions, / none who are born do not die. / On the road of coming and going in saṃsāra, / only the Dharma can extinguish it. / There is no land in the ten directions / that can rescue one when life ends; / only the Buddha can sever and eliminate it, / therefore take refuge in the Buddha. / If a person does what is unwholesome / and delights in practicing the ten unwholesome deeds, / whose mind constantly harbors arrogance / and does not respect the Three Jewels, / who cannot keep the precepts purely / and is indolent and not vigorous— / all such persons / are called the dead. / Regarding the impermanent as permanent, / regarding the impure as pure, / speaking of real suffering as pleasure, / regarding non-self as self— / sentient beings in saṃsāra / are deeply attached to inverted views; / throughout thousands of myriads of koṭis of kalpas, / they know not the root of saṃsāra. / If there is a person who can understand / the true and great Dharma, / he can know that this impermanence / is the foremost root of great suffering. / If a person sees defilements / and severs the root of the three poisons, / he will surely be able to attain / the supreme, great Dharma.”
