The Sūtra of One Hundred Parables says: Formerly, a man married two wives. If he drew close to one, he was resented by the other; unable to decide between them, he lay on his back with his body straight between the two wives. It happened that heavy rain fell, and the house leaked profusely; water and mud fell together into his eyes. Because of his prior agreement, he did not dare get up to avoid it, and consequently both eyes lost their sight. The ordinary people of the world are also like this: they associate with evil friends and practice non-Dharma, creating fettering karma and falling into the three evil destinies, remaining long in birth-and-death and forfeiting the eye of wisdom, just as that foolish man, for the sake of his two wives, lost both his eyes.
