Under the Tang, the Śramaṇa Kongzang resided at Huichang Temple in the capital during the Zhenguan reign-period. He recited more than three hundred fascicles of sūtras and took preaching and converting as his vocation. He traveled through Liangzhou, the rivers, and plains, responding wherever there was a karmic affinity. Formerly, when he went to Mount Fu'er in Lantian, he recited sūtras and brought along six sheng of flour, intending it as a month's provision; yet after three full weeks, eating two sheng each day, it still could not be exhausted. He also moved a divine cauldron, not knowing where it came from. At one time he arrived at Yuquan Temple, intending it to be his final resting place. At that time, there was a severe drought; the spring was exhausted, and the seedlings were scorched. The whole temple was about to scatter. Kongzang then prayed with the utmost sincerity; the spring immediately welled up and overflowed in response to the moment, and torrential rain poured from heaven. Clergy and laity changed countenance and sighed in boundless astonishment. In the sixteenth year of the Zhenguan reign-period, he died at Huichang Temple and was buried back at the mountain.
