I venture to consider: the Bamboo Grove of Rājagṛha was where walking meditation was entrusted; the stone chambers of Vulture Peak were what quiet sitting relied upon. Pure abodes pervade the ten directions; compassionate transformation reaches through the three realms. Thus did they follow from afar after Sudatta, and gaze up in high admiration to Āmrapālī, honoring inexhaustible causes and constructing indestructible lands. When the mind is stirred with reverence, blessings hasten toward the mysterious gate; when a thought arises contrary to respect, karma concentrates on the boiling cauldrons and burning coals. Therefore, upon seeing them, one gives rise to the aspiration, and upon beholding them, one forgets to return. That which increases blessing and produces goodness is called a saṃghārāma. If one builds with a sincere mind, even if small, the blessing obtained is vast and manifold, how much more so for what is great! If one repairs and constructs with a hypocritical mind, even if great, the blessing obtained is still meager, how much more so for what is small! For this reason, if a practitioner wishes to construct, he must act in accordance with the Dharma and must not be deceitful or false.
