'I would rather burn my body and gouge out my eyes
Than bear to practice killing and eat sentient beings.
In the sūtras of compassion preached by all Buddhas,
It is said that one who practices compassion
Would rather break their bones and marrow and spill their brain
Than bear to devour meat and eat sentient beings.
As the Buddha said, one who eats meat
Does not fulfill the practice of compassion;
Confused and submerged in birth and death, they will not become a Buddha.'
