Secondly, there are sentient beings whose bodies are withered and paralyzed, their eyebrows and beards fallen out, their whole bodies swollen and festering, roosting like birds and lodging like deer, utterly cut off from human tracks, polluting their relatives so that people do not wish to see them, which is called leprosy. By what sin was this incurred? The Buddha said: 'Because in their past lives they were held guilty of lacking faith in the Three Jewels, of unfilial behavior toward parents, destroying stūpas and temples, stripping monks of their robes, shooting and hacking worthy and noble ones, harming teachers and elders, being utterly ungrateful, betraying kindness and forgetting righteousness, habitually acting opportunistically, and committing illicit intercourse without distinction of high or low and with no scruples, they have incurred this retribution.'
