As the Abhidharmasamuccaya states: Furthermore, there are four distinctions of karmas: black [karma] with black ripening, white [karma] with white ripening, black-and-white [karma] with black-and-white ripening, and neither-black-nor-white karma without ripening which can exhaust all karmas. Black karma with black ripening refers to unwholesome karma: because it is defiled, it has undesirable ripening. White karma with white ripening refers to wholesome karma of the tridhātu: because it is undefiled, it has desirable ripening. Black-and-white karma with black-and-white ripening refers to mixed karma of the desire realm, because wholesome and unwholesome are mixed. Neither-black-nor-white karma without ripening which can exhaust all karmas refers to the uncontaminated karmas during the path of expedient means and the path of uninterrupted progress: because the path of expedient means and the path of uninterrupted progress are the antidotes to those various karmas. 'Neither black' means it is free from the defilements of afflictions; 'white' means it is completely pure; 'without ripening' means it is opposed to saṃsāra; 'can exhaust all karmas' means that by means of uncontaminated karma, one permanently uproots the three kinds of contaminated karmas—black and so forth—together with the residual impressions of ripening.
