Furthermore, a treatise states: As the Tathāgata said in the Sāgara-nāgarāja-paripṛcchā Sūtra: "Dragon King, by abstaining from killing, one obtains ten cooling dharmas that leave behind the burning affliction of the defilements. What are the ten? First, giving fearlessness to all sentient beings. Second, abiding in the mindfulness of great compassion. Third, severing the faults and habitual tendencies of all defilements. Fourth, obtaining the fruit of being free from illness. Fifth, increasing the seed of long life. Sixth, being constantly protected by non-humans and the like. Seventh, sleeping and waking in peace. Eighth, not seeing bad dreams and being free from a resentful mind. Ninth, not fearing any non-Buddhists. Tenth, upon death, being reborn in heaven. These are called the ten cooling dharmas that leave behind the burning affliction of the defilements. Dragon King, if one dedicates the wholesome root of non-killing to anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi, then when that person attains bodhi, their mind will attain mastery; therefore, their lifespan will be immeasurable. Dragon King, just as a bodhisattva, because of abstaining from killing, can give rise to giving, they will consequently accomplish great wealth and material provisions that cannot be destroyed, obtain a long lifespan, practice the bodhisattva conduct, and surpass all the distressing, evil matters of the world. Thus, Dragon King, the ten wholesome courses of karma are also like this, because they adorn and accomplish great benefits."
