Regarding the seventeenth intermediate existence's path of succession: If a person of Pūrvavideha is to be born in Godānīya, what signs are there? If a person of Godānīya is to be born in Pūrvavideha, what signs are there again? When the people of these two continents are mutually reborn into each other, it is always with one and the same sign: when approaching the end of life, they see a dark cave, and within this cave is red lightning hanging down like a banner, either red or white. The person, seeing it, reaches out with their hands to grasp it; the present existence is destroyed, and catching the banner with their hands and climbing along it in succession, they enter this cave and take an intermediate existence body. Approaching the rebirth-existence, the manner of taking rebirth is also as previously explained: either seeing two cattle or seeing two horses coupling in attachment, lustful desire arises in them. Once lustful desire arises, they immediately receive the rebirth-existence. This is called the seventeenth intermediate existence.
