Fifth is the Great Wailing Hell (Mahāraurava). It is also surrounded by sixteen minor hells (their sizes being as previously described). Why is it called the Great Wailing Hell? The sinners are taken and put into great iron cauldrons, kept for a long time in iron pots where boiling water seethes to cook those sinners. They are also thrown onto great iron griddles and repeatedly roasted. They wail and cry out loudly in acrid, excruciating pain. Because the remainder of their sins is not yet exhausted, they are made not to die; hence it is called Great Wailing. Having suffered torment for a long time, they exit Great Wailing and proceed up to the Cold Ice Hell, only then reaching the end of their lives. It is from cultivating various wrong views, being ensnared by the net of craving, and committing base and vulgar deeds that one falls into the Great Wailing Hell.
