7.34

"When people of the world live in this life, / an axe naturally grows upon their tongues; / speaking all manner of venom and malice, / they in turn bring ruin and harm upon themselves. / Those who should be praised are not extolled; / those who should not be praised are instead lauded. / This is called contention in the mouth; / because of this contention, they receive no joy. / If a man gains wealth through gambling, / that is but a minor contention in the world; / to raise a defiled mind against those of pure conduct— / this is called a great strife within the world. / For thirty-six hundred thousand Nirbudas, / and five Arbudas in the various hells, / one falls instead into the Paduma Hell, / having brought this about by slandering the noble ones, / because of evil committed through verbal and mental karma."
