If a person creates karma with body, speech, and mind, / Having created it, he enters the evil destinies. / Thus he will be born in the Reviving Hell, / A most frightful place where the hair stands on end. / Having passed through countless thousands of koṭis of years, / Having died, he instantly returns to life again. / Enmity and vengeance are each repaid to one another; / Due to this, sentient beings kill one another in turn. / If one gives rise to evil thoughts toward parents, / Or toward the Buddha, bodhisattvas, and the assembly of śrāvakas, / These people will all fall into the Black Rope Hell, / Where the suffering experienced is extremely severe and blazing. / Teaching others wholesome conduct to make them crooked, / Seeing others give rise to goodness and inevitably destroying it— / These people also fall into the Black Rope Hell, / Being double-tongued, of evil speech, and speaking many falsehoods. / Delighting in committing the three kinds of heavy evil karma, / And not cultivating the sprouts of the three kinds of wholesome roots, / These foolish people must surely enter / The Crushing Great Hell to experience suffering for a long time. / Or slaughtering sheep, horses, and various cattle, / Diverse kinds of beasts, chickens, pigs, and the like, / And killing various other insects and ants— / That person shall fall into the Crushing Hell. / There are many kinds of fearful appearances in the world; / Using these to oppress and distress sentient beings, / One shall fall into the Millstone-Mountain Hell, / To endure the suffering of being pressed, ground, pounded, and crushed. / Because of the fetters of greed, hatred, and delusion, / Turning the correct principle upside down to make it different, / Judging what is right to be wrong and violating the Dharma and precepts— / They will be repeatedly wounded by knives and swords. / Relying on strength and power to rob others, / Taking everything from the powerful and the powerless alike— / If one creates such oppressions, / One will be trampled by iron elephants. / If one delights in slaughtering living beings, / Body and hands smeared with blood and mind cruel and evil, / Constantly practicing such impure karma, / They shall be born in the Screaming Place. / Because of distressing living beings in various ways, / They are boiled and roasted in the Screaming Hell. / There is also the Great Screaming Hell therein; / This comes from a deceitful, crooked, and cunning mind, / Covered over by the thicket of diverse views, / And drowned in the dense net of craving. / Constantly practicing such lowest karma, / They then fall into the Great Screaming Hell. / If one arrives at such a Great Screaming Hell, / A blazing iron city, a place where hair stands on end, / The iron halls and iron chambers within it / Completely burn all who come and enter. / If in doing various worldly occupations, / One constantly and excessively disturbs living beings, / They shall be born in the Place of Scorching, / To endure scorching torment for an immeasurable time. / The śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas of the world, / Parents, venerable elders, and seniors— / If one constantly distresses them and makes them unhappy, / They will all fall into the Scorching Hell. / Taking no pleasure in cultivating pure karma for rebirth in heaven, / Always abandoning beloved and close kin— / Those who delight in doing such things, / Those people shall enter the Scorching Hell. / Malicious toward śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas, / As well as all good people, parents, and the like, / Or harming other venerable ones— / They fall into the Scorching Hell, constantly ablaze. / Constantly creating much evil karma, / Never having given rise to a single wholesome thought— / This person goes straight to the Avīci Hell, / To endure immeasurable suffering and distress. / If one proclaims the true Dharma to be non-Dharma, / And proclaims various non-Dharmas to be the true Dharma, / Having no increase in good deeds— / That person shall enter the Avīci Hell. / Reviving, Black Rope, and the two [Crushing] hells, / With Crushing, Screaming, and the like making five; / Scorching and Great Heat together make seven; / The Avīci Hell is the eighth. / These eight are called the great hells, / Fiercely blazing, severely agonizing, and hard to endure. / Because of what persons of evil karma have done, / Within them are sixteen minor hells.
