We have heard that the dim slumber of the tridhātu is entirely because the ten underlying proclivities serve as its lair, and the climbing and grasping of the six thieves are truly because the five entrenchments act as their fierce generals. This causes false thoughts to be spuriously constructed and deluded inversions to arise together in contention. The ten thousand sufferings strive to entangle, and the hundred sorrows all gather. Thereupon, the ten proclivities drive [one] on, and the ten bonds bind [one] fast. The five dull ones easily sink down, and the five keen ones are difficult to control. The [truths of] suffering and accumulation flow downstream, constantly drifting through beginningless [time]; the [truths of] cessation and the path are pure and vacuous—by what means could they ever be realized?
