Now, embroidered rafters and red pillars are not the lofty traces of renouncing household life; shading beneath pines and sitting upon grass are the pure rules for entering the Way. Why is this? The world considers the bodily form precious, and therefore dwells in magnificent houses; the Way considers the household a burden, and therefore casts it off like worn shoes. Among all ordinary officials, who can awaken beforehand? Yet our Teacher of Taming was known as one with innate knowledge. Attaining the Way, entering nirvāṇa, initial birth, and preaching the Dharma were all done beneath trees; such was his intent. Those who shave their hair, remove their hairpins, renounce glory, and discard profit—how could they not look up with admiration and set their minds on this?
