Furthermore, there are three matters through which, having given, one does not attain a supreme and wondrous karmic fruit: first, first generating a vast intention and later giving little; second, picking out poor-quality goods to give to others; third, having carried out the gift, giving rise to regret and resentment in one's mind. Furthermore, there are eight matters through which, having given, one does not attain the superior fruit: first, having given, seeing the faults of the recipient; second, when giving, the mind is not impartial; third, having given, seeking service from the recipient; fourth, having given, delighting in praising oneself; fifth, saying one has nothing and only giving later; sixth, having given, using harsh speech to curse and revile; seventh, having given, demanding twofold in return; eighth, having given, giving rise to doubts. A donor such as this will not be able to directly meet the buddhas, worthy ones, and āryas. If one provides fully endowed form, scent, taste, and tangibility and gives them to the other, this is called pure giving."
