The Buddha told Ānanda: 'The dāna I practiced in my past lives was like this. Prince Xudana (Sudāna) was myself. The father-king at that time was my present father, Śuddhodana. The mother at that time was my present mother, Māyā. The consort at that time was the present Gopī (Gopā). The recluse in the mountains, Azhutuo (Acyuta), was the present Maudgalyāyana. The Lord of Heaven Śakra at that time was the present Śāriputra. The hunter at that time was the present Ānanda. The boy Yeli (Jāli) was my present son, Rāhula. The girl Jiyan (Kṛṣṇājinā) was the present arhat mother of Cūḍa[panthaka]. The brāhmaṇa who begged for the children at that time was the present Devadatta. The brāhmaṇa's wife was Ciñcā-māṇavikā. With such toil and hardship across immeasurable kalpas, I constantly practiced the dānapāramitā. Such was my dāna.'
