Indeed, persons of great wisdom, weary of the world, practice the Way. Although they fully uphold the precepts, inwardly they cherish concentration and wisdom, not displaying the outward signs of upholding them, while speaking inwardly of true virtue. Thus the Avataṃsaka-sūtra says: 'What is the precept of avoiding wrong livelihood? This bodhisattva does not make an outward display of pure precept-observance wishing to let others know it, while inwardly having no true virtue yet displaying the appearance of true virtue. He merely upholds the pure precepts, single-mindedly seeking the Dharma, ultimately reaching sarvajña. What is the precept of not giving rise to evil? This bodhisattva does not consider himself noble and say, "I uphold the precepts," nor, seeing a person who violates the precepts, does he reproach him to cause him worry and vexation. He simply unifies his mind to uphold the pure precepts; the superior fruit will surely be obtained without any need for doubt.'
