The Buddha said to the brāhmaṇa: "These are the thirty-six classes of spirit kings. These good spirits all have myriads of koṭis of river-sands of ghosts and spirits as their retinues, taking turns in secret to protect men and women who receive the three refuges. One should write down the names of these spirit kings and wear them on one's person, so that whether walking, coming, going out, or entering, one will have nothing to fear, dispelling evil and eliminating the unwholesome." The brāhmaṇa assented, saying: "So be it, O God among Gods!"
