The Buddha said, 'By refraining from anger and malice, one obtains ten kinds of merits. What are the ten? First, one is free from all anger. Second, one delights in not amassing wealth. Third, the noble assembly is delighted. Fourth, one constantly meets with the noble and virtuous. Fifth, one attains beneficial matters. Sixth, one's facial countenance is upright and dignified. Seventh, seeing the joy of sentient beings, one gives rise to happiness. Eighth, one attains samādhi. Ninth, one attains luster, gentleness, and pliability of body, speech, and mind. Tenth, upon the dissolution of the body and the end of life, one is reborn in wholesome destinies. Virtuous ones, this is called obtaining ten kinds of merits by refraining from anger and malice. If one can dedicate these roots of goodness toward unsurpassable bodhi, before long, when this person attains unsurpassable wisdom and attains bodhi, all sentient beings in that land will completely attain samādhi, and those who come to be born in that land will have minds that are exceedingly pure.'
