Now, the divine and subtle is tranquil and all-penetrating; perfect wisdom is serene and clearly illuminating. The Way transcends the confines of impure form; the Principle exhausts the realm of arising and ceasing. Since form and consciousness have long been transcended, could he truly have been born in a royal palace? Since arising and ceasing are already exhausted, how could he rely on attendants and guards? It is only that the Great Sage, responding by taking birth, fundamentally aims to benefit beings. Where there is a stimulus, there he appears; there is no obscurity he does not perceive. The opportunities for transformation take myriad paths, and what is received and expounded is not of one kind alone. He may rely on tranquil meditation to awaken to the Way, or resort to wise understanding to open their minds; he may manifest as an infant receiving support, or appear as nursing on milk for nourishment. The conditions for awakening are manifold and cannot be reduced to a single rule. This is the capacity to guide beings, the method for delivering the mundane world.
