The Buddha said to Kāśyapa: 'What is a caṇḍāla-śramaṇa? Kāśyapa, just as a caṇḍāla constantly walks among charnel grounds searching for corpses, devoid of loving-kindness when looking upon sentient beings, and feels great joy in his heart upon seeing a corpse, so too is a śramaṇa-caṇḍāla: constantly devoid of a compassionate mind, he visits the homes of donors practicing unwholesome thoughts. Having obtained what he sought, he gives rise to thoughts of valuing them highly. After receiving material gain from the donor's home, he does not teach the Buddha's Dharma, associates intimately with laypeople, is devoid of a compassionate mind, and constantly seeks material gain. This is called a śramaṇa-caṇḍāla. Such a caṇḍāla is abandoned and avoided by all people. Just as a caṇḍāla never arrives at an auspicious place wherever he goes—why is this? Because he personally practices bad deeds—so too the places to which such a śramaṇa-caṇḍāla goes are also never the good destinies, as he creates much bad karma, having no Dharma to block the evil destinies. Just as a spoiled seed will ultimately never sprout, so too such a ruined śramaṇa, though within the Buddha's Dharma, does not give rise to wholesome roots and does not attain the fruits of a śramaṇa.'
