The greedy mind is never yet satisfied;
Virtue and goodness have never been its concern.
Solely seeking fine food and drink,
Sated and gorged without shame,
Dark defilements are wholly unwiped;
How could the heart's taints be removed?
Breaking the fast and constantly eating at night,
Betraying gifts that are hard to repay.
Though heaven is vast, one's life is brief;
Urged on by karma, one roams in darkness.
Drifting in the four torrential seas,
Hard it is to meet the boat of the six pāramitās.
Minor evils are not even reformed;
How could great goodness be cultivated?
Comparable to the nāga in the garden pond,
How could one equal the exalted stream?
